A UNICEF India officer for 20 years (1986 – 2005), her journey had been lined with an array of responsibilities. She led the implementation of several health, advocacy, EPI and partnership-driven projects, while also heading the communication for several efficacious programs relating to Universal Immunization and Polio control. Before joining UNICEF, she worked with organizations like the Ford Foundation; Dutch Water Mission; Oxfam America; Institute of Social Studies Trust, etc.
Ms. Athreya holds a Masters Degree in Economics & Planning from Madras University, Masters in Business Administration from IIM Kolkata, and a Diploma on Early Childhood studies from Milton Keynes University, England.She has also attained formal trainings in various fields such as- Public health and nutrition issues, PRA/PLA with Robert Chambers and IEC training at BKKBN, Indonesia.
Deeply passionate and socially motivated, she has been a frequent speaker in several global events such as the Third World Summit for Children (Greece, 2001), International Union of Health Education Conference (Amsterdam, 1991), and Communication for Development Conference (Kathmandu, Nepal). Ms. Athreya is also an academic writer, and has penned down inspiring papers on issues relating to Health Communication and Child Rights. In addition to being a Trustee for GoodWeave India since 2014, she is also on the Board of the Pardada Pardadi School for Girls, Anoopshahar, Uttar Pradesh, a board member of World Health Partners, a Trustee of the Kamala Sadgopal Public Trust, an Executive member of the UNICEF Pensioners Group India, Programme Coordinator at the UN Women’s Association Delhi, and Vice President of the Indian Society of Cacti and Succulents. Besides having a stirring career in International Development, she is alsoa trained Yoga instructor.
